Andrea Ganna is an Associate Professor at FIMM and HiLIFE, University of Helsinki, and a Senior Group Leader at Human Technopole. He is also Associate Faculty at the ELLIS Institute Finland and an ELLIS member.
His research lies at the intersection of human genetics, epidemiology, and artificial intelligence. He develops statistical and machine-learning methods to integrate genetics, electronic health records, national health registries, and other molecular data to predict disease trajectories, understand heterogeneity in disease risk and treatment response, and improve disease prevention. A major focus of his work is the development and evaluation of AI models using population-scale health data and their translation into clinically useful and generalizable tools.
He is the recipient of an ERC Starting Grant and the Leena Peltonen Prize for Excellence in Human Genetics, and has co-led major international initiatives including the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative and the INTERVENE consortium. He also initiated ML4HEALTH, a nationwide Finnish health-data research program.
