Tanveer Syeda Mahmood is an Adjunct Professor in the Biomedical Data Science Department at Stanford University. Her research spans computer vision, multimodal AI, and medical imaging.
Previously she focused on visual recognition, including colour, texture, and saliency modelling, as well as large-scale image search and multimedia retrieval. Together with my team, she developed AI systems integrating imaging, clinical, genomic, and pathological data for cardiology and radiology applications. These contributions advanced foundational methods in computer vision and medical imaging.
She is also an IBM Fellow, Chief Scientist, and AI/ML technology leader and works across research leadership, enterprise AI strategy, and large-scale technology development. She is also interested in the full lifecycle of industrial research—from scientific exploration and algorithm development to large-scale R&D leadership and commercialization—focused on translating AI research into scalable systems with real-world impact.
At IBM Research, she led the Medical Sieve Radiology Grand Challenge, an early large-scale effort in AI-based clinical decision support for radiology, in collaboration with RSNA and healthcare systems including Kaiser Permanente and Cedars-Sinai. This helped shape IBM’s healthcare AI direction.
